J.F. Iden - Blue Cut to Clear Figural Table Lamp c. 1880
A stunning kerosene figural lamp by J. F. Iden, N.Y., circa 1880. The figure of the woman supporting the font has a gold-bronze finish; she is in excellent condition, with a lovely original patina, absolutely beautiful! The glass font itself, has a brass shoulder and bottom, and period No. 2 collar; the top brass has some minor dings visible in the pictures. The font, in beautiful deep cobalt blue, cut to clear in a quatrefoil motif, has an old bubble pop on the lady's right side (see pic), but is otherwise in very nice condition, the integrity of the font being sound. The lamp stands on a black slate base, which has a couple small flakes off the top edge, and corner/edge wear typical of period bases - the lamp has evidently been used.
With the exception of the colour, blue cut to clear (versus green), this lamp is the same as pictured in "Oil Lamps II", Catherine M. V. Thuro, page 40. Item a. on the same page, shows the font in blue, with a different base. The lamp stands 15" high to top of collar, and sits on a 5 1/2" square base. Despite the evidence of use, and some minor flaws, this lamp is a simply wonderful find from 1880. A hard to find lamp and the perfect addition for the serious lamp collector.
